The Cross of Jesus Christ refers to the instrument of execution on which Jesus Christ died, marking the end of His three-year ministry and the foundation of Christianity. According to the Gospel accounts, Jesus, under the orders of Pontius Pilate, was led outside the walls of Jerusalem to the small hill of Golgotha, where He was crucified by a special military execution squad led by a centurion. Jesus was forced to carry the cross on His shoulders, as it was customary for condemned criminals. Later, when He was exhausted from the scourging and fatigue, the task of carrying the cross was forced upon a passing farmer named Simon of Cyrene (Mark 15:21). Praying with the cross is an active effort to communicate with God. We wear and hold the cross close to us to show that we share in the suffering of the Lord and for protection.
