Description Authentic Athonite Myrrh Authentic Mount Athos Myrrh is a genuine monastic blessing. It is a beneficial oil that contains a blend of plants and aromatic substances. Athonite Myrrh: What does it symbolize? Myrrh is also known as the “oil of thanksgiving,” the “chrism of thanksgiving,” or the “heavenly chrism.” Its symbolism in Orthodox tradition is rich and deeply significant, as myrrh represents the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, myrrh symbolizes the fragrance of faith, tenderness of heart, and devotion to the Lord. As mentioned in the Gospel, a few days before the Crucifixion of Jesus, while He was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman approached Him holding an alabaster jar of precious myrrh and anointed His head with it (Matthew 26:6–7). From myrrh, the Myrrh-bearing Women took their name—the women who followed the Lord together with the Virgin Mary. They remained with Her during the Passion of Jesus and took care to anoint His body with myrrh, thus offering honor to their Teacher. Mount Athos Myrrh: Preparation, use, and properties! The preparation or boiling of the Myrrh is based on the biblical description given by Moses in the Book of Exodus. The relevant passage states: “And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Take for yourself sweet spices: five hundred shekels of pure myrrh, half as much—two hundred and fifty—of fragrant cinnamon, two hundred and fifty of fragrant cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and olive oil. And you shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfumed mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil” (Exodus 30:22–25). Fragrances: Myrrh, broom, myrtle, Byzantine blend, and cypress.
