In the person of Saint Demetrius, Thessaloniki sees its protector and liberator. Not only because the liberation of the city from the Turks in 1912 coincided with the feast of the Saint but also because, as tradition says, before the liberation of Thessaloniki, its inhabitants saw the Saint on horseback in the White Tower cheering them on. According to the Christian tradition, Saint Demetrius lived and was martyred in Thessaloniki during the reign of Diocletian, while he was the son of an aristocratic family and an officer, however this status did not prevent him from accepting the Orthodox faith and being baptized a Christian.
